Prepping Your Pool for Spring: What You Need to Know

Writer: Tovah CoatsTovah Coats

Winter is on its way out, and that means it's time to get your pool ready for warmer days! A little prep work now will ensure a smooth transition into swim season, so you can spend less time troubleshooting and more time enjoying crystal-clear water. Whether you closed your pool properly last fall or need a little extra TLC to get it back in shape, these expert tips will set you up for success.

1. Start with a Clean Slate

Before you even think about diving in, take the time to remove debris from your pool cover, skimmer baskets, and surrounding areas. Leaves, twigs, and dirt can easily make their way into the water and create unnecessary work down the line. If your pool cover is in good shape, give it a rinse and let it dry before storing it away.

2. Inspect Your Equipment

Your pool’s pump, filter, and heater have been sitting idle for months, so a quick inspection is key. Check for cracks, leaks, or signs of wear and tear. Make sure all hoses and connections are secure, and give your filter a good clean to help it perform at its best. If you’re unsure about any equipment, now is the perfect time to schedule a professional service.

3. Balance the Water Chemistry

Once your pool is uncovered and circulating, it’s time to test and balance the water. Here’s what to look for:

pH Levels: Aim for 7.4-7.6

Alkalinity: Keep it between 80-120 ppm

Chlorine or Sanitizer Levels: Adjust as needed to maintain clear, safe water

Shocking your pool is a good idea after opening to eliminate any lingering bacteria or algae. If your water has turned green, don’t panic! A combination of algaecide, brushing, and filtration will get things back on track.

4. Give Your Pool a Deep Clean

Brushing down walls, vacuuming the floor, and skimming the surface will help remove buildup and keep your pool sparkling. Even if the water looks clear, a thorough cleaning will prevent early-season algae growth.

5. Get Your Pool on a Maintenance Schedule

A well-maintained pool is a happy pool! Start the season with a clear plan for routine maintenance:

✅ Skim and brush the pool weekly

✅ Test and adjust water chemistry regularly

✅ Backwash the filter as needed

✅ Keep an eye on water levels (top off if needed!)

6. Check for Leaks or Damage

The Winter can take a toll on your pool, and weather-related damage may have developed. Look for signs of water loss and inspect tiles, coping, and liner surfaces for any damage. Catching issues early can prevent costly repairs down the road.

7. Turn Up the Heat (If You Have One!)

If your have a pool heater has been off, test it now to make sure it's in working order before you need it. There’s nothing worse than expecting a warm swim, only to find out your heater needs servicing!
